About Stop F: The Hospitium

Built as part of St Mary’s Abbey, the Hospitium dates back to the 14th century and was one of a number of buildings in the abbey grounds.

The building was most likely used as accommodation for visitors, since its name is derived from the word ‘hospitality’.

Located next to the Ouse, a gate led to the river that would have served guests arriving to York by boat.

The lower part of the building is constructed in stone, offering protection against flooding, while the later upper storey is timber-framed.

Repaired by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society during the 19th century, the Hospitium was used to display museum objects.

Since a major renovation in 2008, the building is now used by York Museum Trust’s hospitality business, as a venue for weddings and events.
