About Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate

If the gate is open, you can go into the yard behind the shopping street and even go into the medieval church, a beautiful building with rare box pews surviving from the 17th century. The marriage scene in Gentleman Jack was filmed at Holy Trinity Church. BBC drama series Gentleman Jack is based on the life of Anne Lister in 19th century Yorkshire. Holy Trinity Church is the actual church where the real Anne Lister and Ann Walker cemented their union, an event recreated in the TV series. In 1834, the two women arrived at this church for a service on Easter Sunday, as recorded in Lister’s detailed diaries. They knelt side by side to receive communion together – a ritual which was the closest thing they could have to a wedding, or a blessing of their union, at the time. Legally-binding same sex marriages didn’t arrive in the UK until 180 years later. Gentleman Jack was written by West Yorkshire-born Sally Wainwright, who studied at the University of York, later finding BAFTA success creating and writing TV shows such as Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax.
