About York Cat Trail
The York Cat Trail can be downloaded, or leaflets can be picked up from various locations. Use the trail to spot the cats around York’s historic streets.
No-one knows for certain why and when some of the cat statues were placed on buildings. The first two cats are believed to have appeared in the early 1920s, on a building in Low Ousegate, perhaps placed there to attract attention, or to scare away mice and rats. Now, around 30 cat statues can be found on buildings across York. Enjoy spotting them as you explore!
