About The Red Lion

Housed in a half-timbered medieval building with origins in the 15th century (and a bread oven the pub claims dates to the 13th century), the Red Lion offers Tudor oak beams, low ceilings, open fires and a beer garden tucked just outside the city walls. It became officially licensed in the 19th century and was Grade II listed in 1954. Visitors come for cask ales, hearty British pub food, and a slice of York folklore (including a dubious Dick Turpin escape legend).
