The York Castle Museum is situated on the site of the former York Castle; built in 1068 by William The Conqueror. Here you can explore over 400 years of York's past; from the famous Victorian street, Kirkgate, to the cell of notirious Highwayman Dick Turpin, and all the way to the swinging sixties!

About York Castle Museum
York’s museum of social history, the Castle Museum was opened in 1938, and is housed in the 18th century former-prison buildings of the debtor’s and women’s prisons. Today, you can find a wonderful array of exhibits including Kirkgate; a recreated Victorian street featuring real shops and businesses that would have operated in Victorian York, the cells of York Castle Prison which retell the gruesome stories of its occupants and the harsh punishments they endured, a collection of objects and stories from the First World War and an array of exciting examples of art, fashion and music from the swinging Sixties. This museum really does have something for everyone; it’s family-friendly, interractive and well worth a visit!
