About Fishergate Bar
Fishergate Bar was first recorded in 1315, but most of the current structure is older, dating from around the late 15th century.
One of six entrances in York’s medieval city walls, the south facing gateway suffered considerable damage during the Yorkshire Rebellion in 1489.
Local peasants burned the bar’s gates, protesting against tax rises imposed by King Henry VII.
The uprising was only four years after Richard III had been defeated and killed at the Battle of Bosworth, an indication perhaps of the new Tudor monarch’s unpopularity in York.
Bricked up as a result, the entranceway was not re-opened again until the 1820s when better access was needed to the city’s cattle market.
