About Fairfax House
Castlegate is an absolute gem to explore, a street with a strong Georgian influence, full of fascinating buildings. One of the most interesting places on the street is Fairfax House, built in the mid-1700s as the townhouse of Viscount Fairfax and his daughter Anne.
Arguably one of the finest 18th century townhouses in England, the richly decorated interior is the work of Yorkshire-born architect John Carr. Now a museum, the house contains an amazing collection of furniture from the Georgian period, along with a nationally significant collection of clocks and silver. Fairfax House has been used as a location for film and TV, including Victoria, Gentleman Jack and Bargain Hunt.
