About The Black Swan pub
One of York’s oldest buildings, the Black Swan pub was most likely built as a private residence in the early 15th century.
Built as a family home for merchant William Bowes, who was Sheriff of York in 1417 and went on to become Lord Mayor in 1428.
The properties’ later residents included the parents of General James Wolfe, famous for the capture of Quebec in 1759 from French forces.
His notable victory resulted in the fall of France’s empire in the new world and led to British control of Canada.
Inside the pub is a warren of alleyways, leading to several beautifully panelled rooms, many with low ceilings and beams.
Like many old buildings in York, the pub is said to be haunted by several ghosts, including a Victorian workman and a pair of male legs, seen descending a staircase.
