About St Mary’s Abbey Ruins
Possibly dating back to before 1020 and home to York’s tallest church steeple at 47 metres, the Grade II listed St Mary’s was deconsecrated in 1958 and reopened in 2004 as a contemporary art space. Each year York Art Gallery commissions an artist to create a site-specific installation that responds to the atmospheric medieval interior, with past contributors including Susan Stockwell, Susan Aldworth and the Aesthetica Art Prize finalists.
