About Stonegate

Stonegate follows the Roman “Via Praetoria” that once led to the headquarters of the legionary fortress, and remains one of York’s most celebrated streets — paved in stone (hence the name) and lined with timber-framed and Georgian buildings. Today it is the city’s most prestigious shopping and dining lane, home to landmarks including Ye Olde Starre Inne (York’s oldest licensed inn, established 1644), The Punch Bowl, Mulberry Hall, Bradley’s Jewellers in the leaning “Crooked House,” and the gilded Minerva statue marking the entrance to Minster Gates. Look up for the “Stonegate Devil,” a small red printer’s devil figure marking the street’s long association with bookselling and printing.
