About National Railway Museum
Opened in 1975 in a former locomotive shed, the National Railway Museum has been thrilling visitors ever since, chronicling over 200 years of railway history.
Hear stories about the monumental changes brought about by the arrival of the railways in the early 19th century.
Inside the Great Hall is George Stephenson’s famous steam locomotive, Rocket, from 1829.
The Mallard is also on display, responsible for setting the world speed record for a steam locomotive in 1938, at 126mph.
Visit the Station Hall for a look at a fantastic carriage collection, including the royal trains used by Queen Victoria and Edward VII.
Marvel at the North Shed where countless smaller railway items can be found, ranging from glass to chinaware, and station signs to locomotive nameplates.
Almost 10,000 small railway objects and items can be found inside the National Railway Museum’s North Shed, housing an incredible range of memorabilia, one of Britain’s first open museum stores.
