About The Mosaic Map

Created by artist Janette Ireland and jointly commissioned in 2015 by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and York Museums Trust, the mosaic uses pebbles, fossils, discarded stone from York Minster and tiny millstones to mirror the colours of Smith’s original map — the first geological map of an entire country, and the subject of Simon Winchester’s “The Map That Changed the World.” Genuine Yorkshire rock samples sit in the adjoining flower beds. Visitors can walk across the mosaic itself.
