About Drake’s Fisheries in York

Located on Low Petergate, Drake’s is a family-run fish and chips restaurant and takeaway, nestled in the shadow of the historic York Minster. Expect excellent value for money, quality dishes and friendly service. Renowned for selling traditional Yorkshire fish and chips, you can enjoy the dish either in the upstairs restaurant or from the venue’s takeaway chippy.
The UK’s first fish and chip shop is said to have been opened around 1860 by Joseph Malin, launched near Bow in London’s East End. Another contender for the country’s first fish and chip shop is in northern England, opened about 1863 in Mossley, near Oldham by John Lees, who sold the dish from a wooden hut in the market.
