About The Hospitium
Built as part of St Mary’s Abbey, the Hospitium provided lodging for merchants and lay visitors who could not stay with the monks, with its riverside position suggesting use as a warehouse too. Its stone ground floor dates from the 1300s and the half-timbered upper storey is a later medieval reconstruction. Today it operates as a Grade-listed events venue managed by York Venues — visitors can admire its exterior from the gardens, with interior views typically restricted to wedding and event guests.
