About Everyman Cinema
York’s former Odeon Cinema is nowadays the Everyman Cinema. The Art-Deco exterior has remained relatively unchanged since opening as the Odeon in February 1937. The frontage still bears the Odeon lettering, believed to be the only original sign of its type in the country. The building was constructed away from the city centre, when planning permission could not be obtained to build inside York’s city walls. ‘The Man Who Could Work Miracles’, starring Roland Young, and ‘They Met In A Taxi’, featuring Fay Wray, were the first films shown, when all 1,400-plus seats had sold out within hours of the box office opening.
The Grade-II listed building continues as a cinema today, with many of its original features still in place.
