About Mansion House
Built in the 1720s, mystery surrounds the identity of the actual architect, although some believe the house to have been designed by Richard Boyle, Earl of Burlington.
The building was at first planned to house the city’s records and as a place for mayors to entertain guests.
Older than its London counterpart, York was the first city in England to provide a home for its Principal Citizen.
Outside York and London, Doncaster has the only other Mansion House in the country.
Richly decorated and furnished inside, the Mansion House contains a fascinating collection of civic regalia, ranging from medieval ceremonial swords to a solid silver chamber pot.
