About York Railway Station Entrance (Tea Room Square)

Looking at the station entrance, you can see an area known as Tea Room Square, which includes pubs to the left and the hotel to the right. This area appeared in the last few minutes of the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, where the Olympic heroes are cheered by a huge crowd, after leaving the boat train in London. Representing Victoria Station, the scene was actually filmed at York station, which was adorned with period decoration.

Chariots of Fire depicts the poignant true story of two British athletes vying for gold in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. Filming took place here and on the platforms in June 1980. A preserved steam locomotive was used as a stationary engine, with fake steam effects added. This locomotive can be seen in the nearby National Railway Museum. The station was also used in two other films: The Dresser and Agatha.
