About All Saints Church, North Street

Hidden away, close to the busy street of Micklegate, All Saints North Street is noted for its wealth of late medieval stained glass, some of the finest in Britain.

The church contains at least ten windows from the 15th century which provide an impressive insight into the customs and clothing of the period, including: The ‘Corporal Acts of Mercy’ window, which has the image of a wealthy man visiting the sick, feeding the hungry and clothing the naked; and ‘The Pricke of Conscience’ window, based on a 14th century poem, which illustrates the events of the last 15 days of the world, including flood, fire, earthquakes and stars falling from heaven.

First mentioned in a document of 1089, a place of worship may have existed on the site much earlier than the Norman era.

A column from the Roman period has been used inside the building to hold up the chancel roof.

Look out for beautifully carved angels with musical instruments and the decorated chancel ceiling.

Outside, the stunning 15th century tower with octagonal spire dominates the skyline, rising to 120ft.
