About York Theatre Royal

An interesting fact about this theatre is that Gary Oldman began his acting career here in 1979. Although born in London, one of his first professional roles was here, in the pantomime, playing Dick Whittington’s cat! He is better known for his roles as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies, and Count Dracula. Oldman returned to York Theatre Royal in 2025, in a hugely successful Samuel Beckett play.
