York Minster (West Front)
About York Minster (West Front)
We now arrive at the most famous building in York. Its many TV appearances include the 2015 BBC serial Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. One of the most memorable scenes of the supernatural fantasy is where Mr Norrell, played by Eddie Marsan, brings the statues of York Minster to life, in a demonstration of his power to the York Society of Magicians. Statues animating to life include the kings of England depicted in the Minster’s Quire Screen, which you can see inside if you visit. The BBC crew had to film at night when the Minster was closed, apparently shooting the scene in just one evening. Other parts of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell feature St Williams College nearby and The Shambles. York Minster also featured in the film Elizabeth and the Horrible Histories movie, Bill.
