About York Art Gallery
York Art Gallery was constructed in 1879, when it was used to host the second ‘Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition’. The event, inspired by London’s Great Exhibition, drew more than half a million visitors. At the same time, Exhibition Square was also created, with the later addition of a statue of York-born artist William Etty. In 1892, the building became the City Art Gallery when it was bought by the local council.
The gallery now houses a huge collection of paintings, sculptures and ceramics, spanning more than 600 years of art.
