About Stop C: Multangular Tower

The Multangular Tower marks the western corner of the Roman fortress of Eboracum.

Smaller stones of the lower part, along with the line of terracotta tiles, are original Roman work, while the larger blocks above are medieval rebuilding.

Dating of the tower is disputed but was thought to have been constructed somewhere between the 2^nd and 4^th centuries.

The terracotta line continues along a length of the Roman fortress wall towards the gates of the Museum Gardens.  

From there, the stone wall would have continued into the centre of the modern city, with many more towers along the way.

What we see now is just a corner of a huge fortress, which had its headquarters building on the site where York Minster now stands.

Cannonball damage from the 1644 Civil War siege is still visible on the north face of the tower. When you go inside the open rear of Multangular Tower, you will find Roman stone coffins, relocated from various burial sites around the city.
