About Golden Fleece Pub

The Golden Fleece is believed to be the most haunted pub in the city, with fifteen spectres thought to be in residence.

York was once declared the most haunted city in Europe by the International Ghost Research Foundation, with over 500 hauntings.

First mentioned in records in 1503, the Golden Fleece has been an inn since 1656 though officially licensed in 1668.

The pub was used as a meeting place by businessmen from across Britain who came to negotiate deals with local wool traders in York.

Wool was one of the city’s major industries from the 13th to the 17th century, hence the name of the premises.

Once a coaching inn, where board and lodgings were provided, horses were stabled at the rear in Lady Peckett’s Yard, named after the wife of John, a previous owner of the pub in the 1700s.

Lady Alice Peckett is said to be one of the numerous ghosts that haunts the building, her heavy footsteps can supposedly be heard roaming the staircases and corridors.

Another spectre is One Eyed Jack, apparently seen dressed in a red coat and tri-cornered hat, pacing up and down the bar and carrying a pistol.
