Eboracum welcomed several Roman Emperors, either during their reigns, or earlier when they worked in the city as soldiers and officials.
Constantius Chlorus rose from relative obscurity to become the Emperor of the Western half of the Roman Empire in the late third century.
He led a victorious campaign against a rebellious Britain in AD 297, restoring the country to the Empire before dying in Eboracum in AD 306.
His son, Constantine the Great, was hailed emperor immediately after, probably proclaimed somewhere near to the present-day York Minster.
Constantine would reunite the entire Roman Empire during his reign and helped spread Christianity throughout the Roman world.
Under his rule, persecuted Christians were allowed to worship freely and Christianity eventually became the official religion of the Empire.
