Essex-born Dick Turpin was a violent and ruthless criminal, rather than the dashing outlaw of folklore.
Turpin’s early criminal career began with stealing cattle and poaching before joining a gang of local thieves, engaged in brutal burglaries.
He then turned to highway robbery and was relentlessly pursued, fleeing to East Yorkshire where he stole horses assuming the alias John Palmer.
Arrested for shooting a neighbour’s cockerel, Turpin was sent to York for trial and wrote a letter to his brother-in-law, leading to his true identity being revealed.
After being tried then executed, his body was laid out in the Blue Boar pub’s cellar, attracting curious onlookers who paid to view the corpse.
Turpin’s remains were later stolen by body-snatchers and sold to a surgeon for medical research but were recovered by an angry mob and reburied with quicklime.
