About Anglian Tower
Rediscovered by tunnelling workmen in 1839 and excavated in 1969–70, this small barrel-vaulted stone tower stands over three metres high against the inner face of the Roman/medieval city wall. Scholars dispute its date — variously assigned to the 4th–5th century (late Roman) or the 7th–9th century (Anglian) — but if Anglo-Saxon it is uniquely the only known non-ecclesiastical structure of its kind in the country. Visitors can walk right up to it via a quiet, often-overlooked path behind York Explore Library.
