About Bowes Morrell House
Built around 1396, Bowes Morrell House is one of the best examples of a timber-framed construction in York.
The building was one of four such houses, possibly serving as a vicarage for the nearby church of St Margaret’s or St Peter-le-Willows.
Constructed on an L-shaped plan with an open hall, Bowes Morrell House underwent alterations in the 16th and late 17th centuries.
The original two-storey range was extended in brick following the addition earlier of a timber-frame to the building.
Significant restoration and modification work to the house took place, especially in the 20th century, named after Dr John Bowes Morrell, a founder of the York Conservation Trust.
