Originally constructed in the 13th century, Lendal Tower served as a vital addition to York's medieval defences, controlling river traffic via a large iron chain stretched to Barker Tower on the opposite side of the Ouse.

About Lendal Tower
Lendal Tower was used, along with Barker Tower on the opposite side of the river, to guard the approach to York by water and prevent any attack.
Both towers were linked together by a great iron chain, which stretched across the Ouse, known also as a boom.
First mentioned around 1300, the tower has been altered considerably over many years, to such an extent that very little medieval stonework survives.
Having been used for defensive purposes and to ensure tolls were paid by ships, Lendal Tower fell into the possession of York Waterworks Company in the late 1600s.
The structure took on a vital new role, becoming a water tower, pumping water to the city’s growing population until the 1830s.
By the 1930s, Lendal Tower had been converted into offices and is now used for holiday rentals.
