About Bedern Hall
The name Bedern is derived from the Anglo-Saxon for ‘house of prayer’. The building was used as a refectory by the Vicars Choral, for mealtimes and meetings. After the Reformation, the hall continued to be used but part of it became a private house in the mid-17th century. The hall was later divided into overcrowded tenements, and by the 1840s the whole Bedern area had become a notorious Victorian slum. The building was owned by a local bakery in the first part of the 20th century and was later in the possession of a firm of pork butchers. The area was redeveloped in the late 20th century, when apart from the hall and neighbouring chapel, all the surrounding buildings were removed.
